Criminal charges can have a serious effect on a person's life. Not only does a conviction often carry harsh penalties, but simply being charged with a crime can tarnish a person's reputation, especially for those people who have spent much of their lives serving the communities they live in. Recently, an inspector for the local fire department was arrested on felony theft charges. He has worked for the fire department for 30 years.
The lieutenant was arrested booked into Richmond County jail for allegedly pocketing thousands of dollars from fire inspection fees paid by local businesses. While details surrounding the matter are not entirely clear at this point, an Augusta news source reported that anywhere between $1,000 and $4,000 was missing from fire inspection fees.
Felony charges can come with serious penalties. One lieutenant with the fire department speculated that this man could be facing multiple charges. Not only does the 30-year fire department veteran face prison time if he is found guilty, the fire chief has also made it clear that taking money from citizens is not tolerable, perhaps indicating that the lieutenant's job is at stake as well.
When facing theft charges or other criminal charges, your freedom is at stake. Because of this, it is extremely important to have a good understanding of your rights under the law. Experienced Augusta defense attorneys know how overwhelming accusations of criminal activity can be. However, it is important to remember that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Strong defenses can be built to challenge criminal charges.
